Alexander the Great Route

Location: Western Desert Oases

Pace/Grade: Relaxing/Comfortable

This Seven day expedition follows in the foot steps Alexander the Great as he marched across Egypt in search of fame and glory. We set forth from Alexandria with a visit the WWII battleground of El Alamein, where thousands died in a struggle to control the Suez Canal and its oil choke points. Driving west, we reach the ancient harbor of Marsa Matruh. Then it’s on to Siwa Oasis, site of the famous Oracle visited by Alexander the Great, and home to a people long isolated by the harsh desert environment. Heading eastward, we cross the Great Sand Sea on our drive back to Bahareya Oasis where we visit the recently discovered Golden Mummies. Exploring the White Desert with its unusual limestone formations, gazing upon the incomparable Crystal Mountain, visiting unique oases and an ancient Roman ghost town, this expedition will make the desert come alive as no book or video could ever!
